Highlands Sports Car Club is an independent car club which is not affiliated with the SCCA. Although we are not an SCCA club, our events are very similar, if not identical, to what you would expect to find at an SCCA autocross. We have our own set of Autocross Rules (see below), but we follow SCCA Solo Rules with regard to safety standards and car classes.

Eligibility:

In order to drive a car at our events, participants must possess a valid driver’s license with no provisions limiting the hours of operation or requiring the presence of a “supervising driver”. Learner’s Permits and Provisional Licenses (Limited or Full) are not permitted. Basically, if you can legally drive by yourself at any hour of the day, then you are permitted to drive a car at HSCC autocrosses. Unlicensed drivers 12 years and older may participate in karts. All participants under the age of 18, licensed or unlicensed, must have a minor waiver on file with HSCC management. This minor waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian in the presence of an HSCC officer.

Registering for events:

Highlands Sports Car Club is now using AxWare Online Race Management (ORM) for online registration. AxWare ORM is a web-based application that integrates directly with our timing software. It will allow us to integrate the many aspects of an autocross event into one centralized system that can handle membership data, event scheduling, online registration, online payments, permanent number assignments, pre-assigned rungroups and work heats, and many other things.

What this means for you is better events because we will spend less time doing on-site registration and more time getting in runs. Keeping track of membership data within the timing software will ensure that we have accurate information for each driver (no typos or misspelled names) and makes it easy to keep season points up to date and post them after each event instead of at the end of the year.

How does it work?

Go to http://www.axwaresystems.com/ and click on “AxWare ORM”. Click on “Create New Account”. After your account is created, log in and set up your account by editing the information under “My Controls”. You will need to enter your personal info under “My Information”, select HSCC under “My Clubs” and put in your car information under “My Garage”. My Garage allows you to set up multiple cars and/or multiple classes so that you can easily select which one you plan to use for any particular event. It will also insure that your car number of choice is reserved. After you have set up your account, registering for an event takes just a few mouse clicks.

After registering, we highly encourage you to go ahead and pay for the event right there on the ORM site so that when you arrive at the event site, you simply sign the waiver and show your driver’s license and you’re done! Paying online is safe, secure, and if you can’t make it to an event you have already paid for, don’t worry, you can choose to use the payment for a future event, or receive a prompt refund.

Online registration will automatically open 3 weeks before each event, and close at 5pm the day before.

Although we currently still allow drivers to register in person at the event, we HIGHLY DISCOURAGE doing so. Online registration is the best method for everyone involved.

If all this seems complicated, don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple. Check out the how-to videos below to see just how quick and easy it is. And if you have still have questions about online registration or AxWare ORM, please don’t hesitate to contact Shane Eudy or Rick Burris (see Contact page).

Car Classes:

As stated above, we defer to the SCCA for car classing. Any car defined in the SCCA Solo Rules is welcome at HSCC events. In addition to the standard SCCA classes, we have the following supplemental classes. A more detailed description of each can be found in the HSCC Autocross Rules.

  • Street Tire (T): a Pax’ed class requiring the use of street tires with a minimum treadwear rating of 140
  • Novice (N): a Pax’ed class for competitors new to the sport
  • Pro (P ): a Pax’ed class for competitors seeking a higher level of competition
  • Unlimited Street Tire (X): an open class with only one rule – street tires with a minimum treadwear rating of 140, scored on RAW time only

About Car Numbers:

For the event to run smoothly, it is essential that we be able to easily identify each car. You can help us do this by ensuring that your car is marked with clearly visible class letters and numbers. Although we are not going to force you to meet every single detail of the SCCA rule, please make sure that your car numbers meet the following guidelines:

  • The numbers and letters should be large enough to be seen at a distance of at least 100 feet. (The SCCA calls for a minimum of 4″ for letters and 8″ for numbers).
  • The numbers should be placed on both sides of the car on the doors or body panels (not the windows).
  • The color should be of sufficient contrast to the color of the car – light colored numbers on a white car don’t work very well, especially at night.
  • If you are sharing a car with another driver, please make sure you display the correct numbers before each run.
  • SHOE POLISH ON THE WINDOWS IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE FORM OF IDENTIFICATION!! In the past we have allowed painters tape as a temporary solution. However, some people never quite grasped the concept of “temporary” so, beginning in 2011, PAINTERS TAPE IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE EITHER!!! Cars will not pass tech inspection with shoe polish or painters tape. If you are new to autox and have not yet acquired permanent number, we will have temporary printouts available at registration, possibly for a small fee.
